PETULA ON PRT RECORDS

When the rights to the name PYE expired in 1980, both the label and the studio changed their name to PRT (Precision Records & Tapes). Petula's back catalogued transferred and remained with PRT until it ceased operations in July 1989 when the PYE / PRT catalogue was acquired in 1990 by Castle Communications.

Petula's association with PRT resulted in a surprising Top 10 hit with DOWNTOWN '88 which returned Petula to the UK singles chart in 1988 after a 16 year absence. Throughout the 10 year period in which PRT controlled Petula's back catalogue of her Pye recordings there were numerous PRT releases issued, focusing mainly on hit recording compilations, in the UK, throughout Europe, Australia and South Korea.

Here we annotate and present the PRT catalogue of Petula Clark releases together with facts, figures, track listings, album artwork, videos and news cuttings from our archive collection.

SPOTLIGHT ON PETULA CLARK

First issued by PRT in the UK in May 1980 as a 24 track double album, the SPOTLIGHT album was also issued in Greece in 1980 as a single album, in Spain in 1981 as a double album, in Australia in 1981 over two volumes and in Korea in 1984 as a single album. IT'S A FACT: The UK issue featured 24 tracks across 2 LPS, 14 of the 24 tracks were in mono which is odd especially considering that PRT will have had access to stereo versions. IT'S A FACT: In the UK, SPOTLIGHT was deleted in 1985.

PRT STUDIOS
The home of Pye Studios (later PRT Studios from September 1980) was located in the basement of ATV House in Great Cumberland Place (re-named under PRT as ACC House), Bryanston Street. Petula's mega-hit Downtown was recorded here. Petula returned to PRT studios in 1986, after a 9 year absence of recording there, and recorded demo recordings for her musical Someone Like You. These recordings are unreleased but form part of our archive collection.

Guess You've Got A Lot To Learn - recorded by Petula Clark and Majorie Barnes (from the Clark / Shipman musical Someone Like You)

Liberty - recorded by Lance Ellington (from the Clark / Shipman musical Someone Like You)

Look Where The Journey Led - recorded by Petula Clark (from the Clark / Shipman musical Someone Like You)

Three Time Loser - recorded by Petula Clark (from the Clark / Shipman musical Someone Like You
)

The revival of Downtown can be traced back to then BBC Children's TV presenter Phillip Schofield who began using Downtown in 1987 as a platform for a competition for viewers to take photos of themselves in a Downtown setting. Reacting to the response, PRT quickly re-issued the original recording b/w I Know A Place. Daily plugs were presented by Phillip Schofield in an attempt to get Petula back in the charts - Philip even caught up with Petula by telephone. Despite Phillip Schofield's enthusiastic promotion of the single, the release failed to break into the top 50 singles chart. IT'S A FACT: The re-issue peaked in the UK top 200 at #116.

DOWNTOWN / I KNOW A PLACE / PRT PYS 1 / 1987 (UK)

1987 ended with PRT releasing THE HIT SINGLES COLLECTION, a double album of 32 tracks featuring all of Petula's UK and US top fifty hits presented in a gatefold sleeve. In Greece, THE HIT SINGLES COLLECTION was issued in 1989 as a single LP. IT'S A FACT: THE HIT SINGLES COLLECTION was the first ever Petula CD to be released in the UK.

DOWNTOWN '88

The 1987 re-issue of Downtown sparked the interest of the staff at DJ mail out service DMC (based in Berkshire) who, possibly unaware that Petula herself had reworked Downtown as a disco track in 1977, wondered if the track would work as a club remix. The idea was floated past the Dutch remixer Peter 'Hithouse' Slaghuis who embarked on remixing the original into a house remix entitled DOWNTOWN '88. The reaction to DOWTOWN '88 was overwhelming and the track was promptly issued by PRT as single in November 1988 in the UK, Germany, Belgium and Australia. Following its release in the UK, the single was a Top 40 hit within a fortnight and was a Top 10 hit three weeks later in time for Christmas. DOWNTOWN '88 remained in the UK singles charts for 14 weeks. In Belgium DOWNTOWN '88 peaked at #19 and in Germany at #13. IT'S A FACT: DOWNTOWN '88 was Petula's biggest hit single in 21 years!

In an effort to cash in on the chart success of Downtown '88 a 20 track album was quickly issued in December 1988 by PRT but oddly the album did not include the hit single in question!

Following the enormous success of the Top 10 smash Downtown '88 PRT embarked on a further radical remix by DMC's Peter Slaghuis of Petula's recording of Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent's I Couldn't Live Without Your Love which had been a smash hit for Petula in 1967. The remix was issued on 7", 12" and CD single formats. Following its release on 05 June 1989 on Legacy (a subsidiary of PRT) I Couldn't Live Without Your Love '89 Mix failed to trouble the charts. A month after its release PRT ceased operations in July 1989 when the PYE / PRT catalogue was acquired in 1990 by Castle Communications.

IT'S A FACT: It was originally intended for You'd Better Come Home to be one of the featured bonus tracks but was replaced last minute with the Clark composition Come On Home (see press release below).

I Couldn't Live Without Your Love '89 Mix / Come On Home / PRT - Legacy LGY 100 (UK) 7" single

I Couldn't Live Without Your Love '89 Mix / Come On Home / PRT 246 834-7 (GERMANY) 7" single

The final releases on the PRT label were European and issued in 1989 - presumably the arrangements for these releases were made before PRT made the decision to cease operations in July 1989.
