WHEN IN
SPAIN ... PETULA'S SPANISH EPs
Petula
has recorded in 5 languages; English, French, German, Italian and
Spanish. In November 1964, Petula recorded 4 songs in Spanish, namely;
Que Tal Dolly (Hello Dolly), Pequena Flor (Petite Fleur), Tu No Tienes
Corazon (Anyone Who Had A Heart) and Cantando Al Caminar (Je Chante
Doucement / The Road). These 4 songs represent her only recordings in
Spanish and were issued on EPs in Spain and France. The backing tracks
for the 4 Spanish recordings were recorded at Pye Studios in London and
Petula laid down her Spanish vocals on 16 November 1964 at Europa -
Sonor Studios in Paris. Speaking in 1998 in an interview for the release of The International Collection, Petula commented: "Frankly, I found Spanish to be quite a challenge. It was more difficult for me than the other
languages. Eventually, I would like to have sung more in Spanish".
Despite
recording just 4 songs in Spanish (issued in Spain as "Petula Clark
- Canta En Espanol", Petula's popularity in Spain is demonstrated
in the large quantity of EPs that were released in Spain throughout the
1950s and 1960s. Here we present covers from our archive collection,
representing Petula's Spanish EP catalogue.
